A $300 book-buyer’s bargain might seem like a no-brainer.
But in this case, it could save you a lot of money.
National Booksellers Association spokeswoman Melissa Glynn says she’s heard from some readers who have ordered a copy in advance of its release and are now spending the savings to buy books online.
She also said online booksellers offer discounts of up to 50 percent off the average retail price for books, a bargain that could save a lot more than a dollar.
The Association offers several programs to help readers shop online and is urging its members to make the best of their savings.
Here are some things to consider before you buy a book online: •If you can’t find a bookstore near you, consider book clubs.
You can join a book club, which is a group of people who share a common interest in a particular subject, to help you browse through titles and find the one best for you.
The members will review the titles together and decide which ones to buy, and you can share the information with other members.
You also can use the club’s Web site to find bookstores near you.
•If the online retailer has a store near you that sells physical books, consider that you might be able to save money online by buying physical books.
If you need a specific title and you know the online seller is located in a state where it’s illegal to sell the book, you can try buying that book online instead.
The online retailer will not be charged for shipping.
•You can also use Amazon Prime’s Kindle Unlimited program, which allows customers to buy a Kindle e-reader and pay nothing for the book.
It costs $99 a year and gives customers unlimited access to books, videos and music, and a chance to download books to their computers and smartphones.
Amazon also offers a $5 discount to Amazon Prime members, who can get free books from Amazon through a special program.
If that’s too much for you, Amazon also provides free books through the company’s Kindle store.
You can still purchase a physical copy online, but you can save money by going to a store with a store-brand shelf and ordering through Amazon’s website.
That way, you don’t have to worry about the store’s selection and can shop for books that are more expensive.
For example, a book retailer with a physical bookstore might have a more affordable selection of titles than the one you’re going to get from Amazon, Glynn said.
You could also shop for more affordable books on Amazon’s Web sites.
•Buying a physical book isn’t an exact science.
You’ll need to use a guidebook or a list of recommended books, or the online bookseller will suggest titles.
If a retailer has no book list, you’ll have to do your own research.
You should also ask the retailer to explain what it expects the book to look like and sound like, Glyn says.
A few years ago, Gynn said she didn’t buy a hardcover copy of “The Handmaiden’s Tale” because she had no idea it was available online.
Then, she bought a paperback copy of the novel, and that book is now one of her favorites.
She said the online retailers make it easy to browse the books and get recommendations, which she finds useful when she needs to make a shopping list.
